SUBSCRIPTION BASED DIGITAL PROVIDERS..
Cable TV.
Cable television is here and has been using the Digital platform for approx 2 years depending on the area you live in this is totally subscription based service, choice is varied if not limited compared to a Sky subscription service also very restricted to location depending on whether or not the cable tv company has installed the service. Very limited in Rural areas although most towns are now linked up.
Sky Television were the first company in the U.K. to offer a Digital platform of programming by far now the best option if you want a subscription based service with approx 300+ channels available to choose from, but now Sky have also gone into the free-view suppliers also. Coverage is approx 98% of the U.K. and is not affected by location only problems can arise from obstructions such as buildings, trees etc but usually can be got around or very heavy rain or snow.
FREE-VIEW DIGITAL PROVIDERS (one off payment no ongoing subscriptions)
Free-view was set-up approx 2 years ago offering the first none subscription based free to air Digital platform since the failure of On Digital. Using a Digital Television Aerial and a free-view set top box plugged into this you will receive 36 tv channels and approx 20 radio stations limited interactive services. Most people opt for this as this was the only Free Digital service available in the U.K. Coverage is currently 60% of the country but relies on being able to pick up off one of the main Television Transmitters. In rural areas this can cause problems due to hills being in the way and you may be running of a relay transmitter that does not and will not in the future transmit Digital Signals. FREE-VIEW are going to set up a Satellite based service same channels in the next couple of months to compensate for their lack of coverage prices have been mentioned of £150.00 for a dish and receiver ,we will keep you updated when more is announced. This will give them the coverage they need before DIGITAL SWITCHOVER comes into play.

Free-Sat from Sky was started in October 2005 to rival the current Free-view service available offering now 108 channels and over 80 radio stations and an excellent interactive service plus upgrade to subscription service without any further costs, Free-Sat uses a Satellite Receiver and dish and a Free-view card not being affected by hills as Free-view this service is ideal for almost everyone especially those in none coverage areas.
