What is High Definition TV ?

To make things easy and without too much technical info High Definition is a giant leap forward in T.V. standards, it is a way of transmitting 6 times more information to generate a picture of very high resolution on your television/plasma/lcd.

                      Standards

   D.V.I. (Digital Video Interface)

D.V.I. was really the first version to come out capable of  carrying uncompressed high-definition (HD) video although things have changed very quickly with another standard H.D.M.I. which is superior with its capability of carrying audio also. If you have bought a a T.V. with D.V.I. then don't worry all can be connected.

       H.D.M.I. (High Definition Media Interface)

1. All-digital gives the highest quality available.
HDMI is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080I and even upcoming 1080p. An all-digital, uncompressed signal translates into the highest quality video and audio, seen and heard, direct from the source.

2. A single cable connection means no more confusion, no more tangled cable mess
Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components.

3. Integrated remote provides simple control of your system.
HDMI has built-in intelligence that can automatically configure your system on demand. When utilizing this feature, with the click of a single button, your remote control can tell your HDMI-linked system which components to turn on or off to view a DVD, listen to a CD, or watch cable or satellite TV.

4. Automatic format adjustment matches content to preferred viewing format.
Content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats. HDMI systems will automatically configure to display the content in the most effective format. If cable TV content jumps from 16:9 format to standard 4:3, an HDMI-enabled TV can automatically adjust to match the ideal format.

   WHO IS TRANSMITTING WHAT?

Sky is starting its paid service and are charging £10 a month for 7 channels with varying programmes SKY HDTV if you require an installation approx cost is £270.00 compared with SKY'S  £300.00 there will be no difference in price for upgrading or new customers.

The BBC has made no secret of its HD intentions and the latest we have is that it will screen the World Cup for free on a HD channels available via the Astra satellites which will be viewable on Sky systems as well as any free to air boxes.

BBC HD

The BBC will broadcast a range of BBC programmes in HD, including the World Cup and Wimbledon coverage. BBC HD is available without a subscription. UP AND RUNNING NOW CALL FOR MORE INFO.

Other broadcasters like Channel Four, which has a wealth of HD material like Desperate Housewives and Lost, are also mulling over their HD options, and were C4 to join with the BBC, Euro 1080 and maybe even a few other companies, Sky might find that it is having to deal with a growing free to air HD alternative to its services.

In the long run it could potentially develop into HD equivalent of Freeview with viewers just paying a one off fee for the box and dish. Bizarrely Sky might even get behind it offering viewers a free-to-air receiver compatible with its HD services which it would then use to tempt the HD freebie mob into upgrading or paying for sports events or movies.

The main problems with transmission of  H.D.T.V. is that it requires a lot of  bandwith and cannot at present be transmitted through the Aerial system until the analogue stations are taken off and free up space but we all know of the Free-view service that is in the process of being put on Satellite by the B.B.C.this should allow for H.DT.V .

WE WILL KEEP YOU POSTED AS AND WHEN THINGS CHANGE.

Remember if you are buying  a T.V. then make sure it carries the H.D. logo and preferably the H.D.M.I. socket on the back not D.V.I..
